Today was supposed to be the start of the trip. Easy flight to atl, 2 hour layover, flight to Paris, 2 hour layover, then short flight to Biarritz. I’d get two days in Biarritz to explore and get on the right time zone. The travel gods and Delta had other plans however.
One of the FAs for the atl flight was apparently delayed in fll. This would now leave me with 30 minutes to make the transfer in atl. I had a quick conversation with the lounge agent and agreed that this was tight, but considering which terminal I’d arrive at, possible. The alternative routes were sub-optimal. Thirty minutes later, however, it was announced that the FA was delayed another 20 minutes, making the connection all but impossible.
Shockingly, a 2 hour delay meant that almost everyone on that flight (in the lounge at least) was going to miss their connections. The alternate routes for my trip had gotten even worse, so rather then potentially get stuck in atl or one of the various New York (!!!) airports, I opted to spend another night in my own bed and fly the next day.
Kris was already home by the time I had everything ironed out, so he hopped back in the car to make his second trip to the airport. I got to retrieve my checked bag and start to rearrange my plans. This included a ride back to the airport as Kris has to be at taxes in the morning for the last session. Fortunately the first amazing friend I called readily agreed.
While I’m grateful to get to see Kris and some friends tonight, there’s an emotional tax to restarting tomorrow. I’m not looking forward to saying goodbye again. I think it’s good that Kris is volunteering in the morning so we don’t have to do the airport thing again. Hopefully tomorrow brings smoother travels!
